Il personale del Raggruppamento Carabinieri CITES, con l'aiuto di un veterinario esperto, ha trasferito cinque esemplari - tre crotali o serpenti a sonagli (Crotalus atrox), una vipera della Mauritania (Daboia mauritanica) e una tartaruga azzannatrice (Chelydra serpentina) da Belpasso (Catania) a Benevento. In particolare i tre serpenti a sonagli o Crotali (Crotalus atrox) e la vipera mauritanica (Daboia mauritanica), pericolosi per l'uomo, per il veleno che può portare anche alla morte, erano custoditi in una struttura nell'ex Centro di Recupero di Fauna Selvatica di Belpasso, a Catania. Erano stati affidati dalla Prefettura a un responsabile dell'associazione che gestiva il centro di recupero, ormai chiuso da anni. La detenzione, (anche alla luce delle modifiche normative di cui al D.Lgs 135 del 2022), quindi, era divenuta non più legittima.
