Per mesi, Pierre Fautrel, Hugo Caselles-Dupré e Gauthier Vernier hanno "addestrato" un algoritmo con le loro immagini cerebrali per riuscire a tradurre in immagini i loro pensieri. "Non è esattamente quello a cui stavo pensando - ha spiegato Pierre Fautrel - ma ha mantenuto gli elementi semantici di ciò che avevo in mente, cioè una montagna infuocata con lava che scorre, un paesaggio su sfondo chiaro. Nella mia testa non era esattamente questa la composizione, perché non sono un esperto di surrealismo. Nella mia mente vedevo qualcosa di più... fotorealistico. Ma la cosa interessante è vedere come l'algoritmo ha tradotto quel pensiero e ha dato questo risultato che, alla fine, è abbastanza vicino al mio pensiero".Per rilevare le onde cerebrali, Fautrel si è sottoposto a una Risonanza Magnetica nell'Istituto del cervello di Parigi, dove il gruppo conduce le sue ricerche. Per il neuroradiologo Charles Mellerio che partecipa al progetto scientifico, sono stati i recenti rapidi progressi dell'IA generativa e dell'imaging funzionale che hanno permesso questo risultato, al quale non avrebbe mai creduto solo due anni fa. Un esperimento che apre scenari incredibili nel campo delle neuroscienze."Il progresso non è lineare, è esponenziale - ha sottolineato - quindi è molto probabile che un domani si riesca a ricreare un film, una specie di cinema interiore.
