(askanews) - È decollato come previsto alle 10.19 ora locale (14.19 GMT) dal Kennedy Space Center in Florida, il razzo Falcon Heavy di SpaceX, che trasporta la sonda della Nasa. Inizia così ufficialmente la missione Psyche, progettata per studiare un asteroide ricco di metalli che gli scienziati ritengono possa essere il nucleo di un antico corpo celeste.Il viaggio per arrivare all'asteroide Psyche sarà molto lungo: si trova, infatti, nella parte esterna della fascia degli asteroidi, tra le orbite di Marte e Giove. La sonda della Nasa dovrà percorrere circa 3,5 miliardi di chilometri per raggiungerlo; arrivo previsto per l'estate del 2029.Grazie alla luce riflessa dalla sua superficie, gli scienziati sanno che Psyche è molto denso e che è fatto di metallo, ma anche di altra materia, forse persino di roccia.La sonda rimarrà in orbita intorno a Psyche per poco più di due anni per studiarlo, alternando diverse altitudini. Utilizzerà tre strumenti scientifici: immagini multispettrali per fotografarlo, spettrometri per determinarne la composizione e magnetometri per misurarne il campo magnetico. Per spostarsi, utilizzerà anche propulsori a effetto Hall, una novità assoluta per i viaggi interplanetari.
