Le ottime interpretazioni degli attori – su tutti Edgerton e Weaver – fanno il resto ◆ La recensione di BATTISTA GARDONCINI *► Pochi, quando si parla dei grandi autori della Nuova Hollywood, mettono accanto ai nomi di De Palma, Coppola, Altman, Lucas e Scorsese quello di Paul Schrader. Ma sbagliano, perché lui, nonostante il rigore calvinista che lo ha tenuto un po’ ai margini dello star system, è stato uno dei personaggi più influenti di quel periodo d’oro del cinema americano. Sue sono le sceneggiature di “Taxi Driver”,  “Yakuza”, “Toro scatenato”, “Mosquito Coast”. Suoi sono film come “Hardcore”, “American gigolo”, “Il bacio della pantera” e “Il collezionista di carte”. Ancora oggi, a settantasette anni, Schrader continua a sfornare film molto interessanti, come “Il maestro giardiniere”, uscito nel 2022, ma arrivato nelle nostre sale da pochi giorni.La storia è semplice. Narvel Roth (Joel Edgerton) è un giardiniere dal passato misterioso che lavora nella tenuta della vedova Norma Haverhill (Sigourney Weaver) e ha con lei una discreta relazione. Ogni anno, insieme a una piccola squadra di apprendisti, Edgerton prepara il giardino per una esposizione botanica di beneficienza. Ma l’equilibrio viene turbato dall’arrivo nella squadra della giovane Maya (Quintessa Swindell), un’orfana nipote della vedova. La ragazza ha qualche problema di droga, ed è perseguitata da una banda di spacciatori. Per aiutarla il giardiniere è costretto a ricorrere alla violenza che aveva caratterizzato la sua vita precedente, di cui porta ancora sulla pelle i segni indelebili. E naturalmente suscita la gelosia della vedova. Schrader ha la straordinaria capacità di creare atmosfere torbide e coinvolgenti quasi dal nulla. Qui ci riesce sfruttando il contrasto tra la bellezza del giardino, ripreso in tutti i dettagli, e il piatto squallore del paesaggio urbano della provincia americana.
