Tokyo spera che la messa a punto della tecnologia di allunaggio possa finalmente portare al successo dopo i primi tentativi andati male, in un'impresa in cui sono molti ad aver fallito. Stati Uniti compresi dopo che, di recente, la sonda privata Peregrine di Astrobotic, a causa di un problema tecnico e della perdita di carburante, ha mancato l'obiettivo ed è stata costretta a tornare sulla Terra e "suicidarsi" distruggendosi al rientro nell'atmosfera.
