(askanews) - Strati di ghiaccio d'acqua che si estendono per diversi chilometri nel sottosuolo di Marte; la maggior quantità d'acqua mai trovata a queste latitudini sul pianeta rosso. La scoperta risale a qualche anno fa ma è stata confermata dai dati più recenti forniti dalla sonda Mars Express dell'Esa grazie alle osservazioni della zona denominata Medusae Fossae, nei pressi dell'equatore marziano.Quindici anni fa la sonda aveva rivelato la presenza di depositi massicci fino a 2 km e mezzo di profondità. Dalle prime osservazioni, tuttavia, non era chiaro di cosa si trattasse. Le nuove ricerche con il radar Marsis della sonda, però, hanno fornito una risposta entusiasmante. Si tratterebbe, infatti, di depositi di polvere di ghiaccio d'acqua, spessi anche fino a 3,7 Km, sormontati da uno strato protettivo di cenere e polvere spesso centinaia di metri.Se questo ghiaccio fosse fuso, hanno spiegato gli scienziati dello Smithsonian Institution americano, autori della nuova ricerca e dello studio iniziato nel 2007, l'acqua che ne deriverebbe sarebbe in grado di ricoprire l'intero pianeta con un "oceano" profondo fino a 2 metri (o poco più). Insomma, tanta acqua quanta ce n'è nel Mar Rosso, sulla Terra.Si tratta di una scoperta d'importanza fondamentale per capire l'evoluzione geologica del pianeta.
