Secondo una fonte attendibile - scrive l'Express - "Charles trascorrerà i prossimi 10 giorni nel maniero, finché non raggiungerà il resto della famiglia a Balmoral. È qualcosa che fa ogni anno per riorganizzarsi, rilassarsi e pianificare le discussioni che avrà con i membri della famiglia reale quando si incontreranno nel castello scozzese". La storia del Castello di Mey è particolarmente romantica: la nonna del re, la defunta Regina Madre, lo vide per la prima volta nel 1952 mentre passeggiava nella zona. Era rimasta vedova da poco, dopo la morte di re Giorgio VI. Il castello del XVI secolo, che domina le acque agitate del Pentland Firth, all'epoca era abbandonato. "Quanto sembra triste", si dice abbia osservato la Regina Madre. "Proprio come me". Secondo la fonte, l'affetto di re Carlo per la sua defunta nonna è ancora grande. Il re inizia sempre la sua visita al castello cogliendo un mazzo di fiori nel giardino recintato della regina madre e deponendoli sulla panchina di pietra dalla quale la nonna ammirava le isole Orcadi, oltre il Firth. Sabato, Charles dovrebbe visitare gli annuali Mey Highland Games nel villaggio di John O'Groats.
