"interruttore killer" che si attiva solo in prossimità delle cellule malate. A descriverli su Nature Nanotechnology è il gruppo di ricerca dell'Istituto Karolinska in Svezia guidato da Björn Högberg. Uccidere una cellula tumorale lo si può fare in vari modi, la vera sfida è riuscire a farlo in modo preciso, ossia senza colpire quelle sane. Un nuovo metodo sviluppato dai ricercatori svedesi sfrutta la potenza di una macchina molecolare, una sorta di nanorobot, che quando raggiunge la superficie di una cellula riesce a distruggerla in pochi passaggi ma "se la somministrassi come farmaco - ha detto Högberg - inizierebbe a uccidere indiscriminatamente le cellule del corpo, il che non sarebbe positivo. Allora per aggirare il problema abbiamo nascosto l'arma all'interno di una nanostruttura costruita a partire da Dna". Si tratta di una sorta di origami realizzato usando la stessa molecola che costituisce il nostro genoma ed è in grado di aprirsi solo in determinate circostanze, ossia nei pressi delle cellule tumorali. La chiave per far aprire l'involucro di Dna e far attivare la macchina killer è il basso pH che circonda i tumori e per verificarne il funzionamento i ricercatori hanno eseguito test su topi affetti da cancro al seno in cui hanno verificato la riduzione del 70% della crescita delle cellule tumorali."Ora dobbiamo indagare se il metodo funziona in modelli di cancro più avanzati che assomigliano più da vicino alla vera malattia umana", ha aggiunto Yang Wang, uno dei ricercatori del gruppo. "Prima che possa essere testato sugli esseri umani - ha concluso - bobbiamo anche comprenderne eventuali altri effetti collaterali". Tra i prossimi passi, dichiarano gli autori, ci sarà l'obietto di rendere il nanorobot capace di riconoscere anche altre tipologie di cellule tumorali, usando come obiettivo alcune proteine specifiche delle cellule malate.
