(askanews) - Gli "Hoppers" hanno guadagnato le loro "ali spaziali". Si è svolta lunedì 22 aprile, al Centro Astronautico Europeo di Colonia, in Germania, la cerimonia di consegna dei brevetti ai cinque nuovi astronauti europei che si uniscono ai cosiddetti "Shenanigans" selezionati nel 2009, di cui fanno parte anche Luca Parmitano e Samantha Cristoforetti.I nuovi astronauti dell'ESA sono Sophie Adenot, Pablo Àlvarez Fernàndez, Rosemary Coogan, Raphael Liégeois e Marco Sieber. A loro si aggiunge Katherine Bennell-Pegg dell'Agenzia spaziale australiana che si è addestrata assieme ai suoi compagni di classe dell'ESA.Il graduation day dei nuovi astronauti europei è stato definito un "traguardo significativo" dal direttore generale dell'Agenzia Spaziale Europa, Josef Aschbacher anche perché riafferma l'impegno europeo nel promuovere la cooperazione internazionale nell'esplorazione spaziale. "L'esplorazione spaziale - ha detto Aschbacher - è, ovviamente, una delle priorità fondamentali dell'Agenzia spaziale europea. Nell'agenda 2025 sono stato molto chiaro sul fatto che bisogna fare passi avanti per essere competitivi su scala mondiale. Al recente Colorado Springs Space Symposium, negli Stati Uniti, ho visto quanta energie e quanti sforzi si stanno mettendo -anche dal punto di vista commerciale - nell'esplorazione spaziale. L'Europa deve essere parte di tutto questo ed esserne un leader perché noi siamo un'eccellenza in questo settore. Per questo dobbiamo investire, nell'esplorazione e nello Spazio in generale".Selezionati tra oltre 22.500 candidati, i 5 nuovi astronauti ESA passeranno ora alle fasi successive di pre-assegnazione e addestramento specifico per specifiche missioni spaziali, auspicabilmente a partire dal 2026, aprendo la strada a future missioni verso la Stazione Spaziale Internazionale, la Lunar Gateway e anche verso la Luna.Per la prima volta, inoltre nel 2022 è stato selezionato anche un gruppo di astronauti della riserva tra cui due italiani, il capitano Andrea Patassa, pilota sperimentatore dell'Aeronautica Militare e Anthea Comellini, ingegnere aerospaziale.
