Pertanto "ci aspettiamo che, per esempio, il livello di sensibilità nell'ambito preventivo possa crescere". Lo ha detto Francesco Cairo, professore di Parodontologia presso l'Università di Firenze e presidente della Società italiana di parodontologia e implantologia (Sidp), all'Adnkronos Salute in occasione della Giornata nazionale della parodontite, che si celebra oggi. "Il ruolo della società scientifica è molto solido e nobile - spiega Cairo - portare all'attenzione di tutti l'impatto della parodontite, causa fondamentale non solo nell'edentulismo, quindi nella caduta dei denti, ma anche una concausa sostanziale di gravi malattie sistemiche come le patologie cardiovascolari, il diabete o alcune malattie reumatologiche. Come società scientifica possiamo fornire a colleghi e a pazienti strumenti per migliorare lo scenario in questione" e "il confronto con le istituzioni è fondamentale". Si tratta della "sesta malattia non trasmissibile nell'ambito delle malattie croniche - illustra il docente - In Italia i dati ci dicono che oltre il 50% delle persone hanno parodontite e una buonissima fetta ha perso i denti: il 25% degli over 65 ha perso completamente i denti e quasi il 50% degli over 75 sono senza denti. Questo significa che è una patologia grave, con grossissime ripercussioni nell'ambito della nutrizione, nell'ambito psicologico ed estetico". La buona notizia è che può "essere curata brillantemente, con grandi effetti clinici nel lungo termine e pochi costi per i pazienti".In questo contesto, "la società scientifica - precisa il presidente Sidp - deve fornire ai colleghi gli elementi strutturali, scientifici per implementare la prevenzione, per migliorare la diagnosi, per rendere più fruibile la terapia. Ma, al contempo, deve essere di supporto, attraverso la comunicazione, anche ai cittadini e fornire, per esempio, elementi tangibili perché una persona possa riconoscere, allo specchio, l'importanza del sanguinamento delle gengive o di un dente, se si muove, di una gengiva che cambia forma.
