Dopo due settimane di letargo nella fredda notte lunare la sonda giapponese Smart Lander for Investigating Moon ha dato segni di vita, rispondendo ai comandi inviatigli dalla Terra e facendo sapere a tutti di aver superato la rigida temperatura del buio lunare e di essere pronta a riprendere il suo lavoro.Durante l'allunaggio, il 20 gennaio, non tutto era andato per il meglio e il lander si era ritrovato sulla superficie lunare con i pannelli solari non orientati in modo corretto, per questo, le sue batterie avevano smesso di funzionare dopo un paio di giorni in cui i suoi strumenti e le macchine fotografiche avevano fatto regolarmente il loro dovere. Non essendo stato progettato per resistere a basse temperature, il team della Jaxa, l'agenzia spaziale giapponese, non era sicuro che potesse sopravvivere. Invece, la sua resilienza ha avuto la meglio e, quando il Sole ha ricominciato a irradiare i suoi pannelli, la sonda ha pian piano ripreso a funzionare.Assieme al lander c'è anche un piccolo rover, Lev-2, grande come una pallina da tennis che può rotolare sul suolo lunare scattando immagini e rilevando dati.Tutto questo dimostra come le missioni lunari siano ancora qualcosa di molto complicato, nonostante i molti passi avanti fatti dal punto di vista tecnologico dai tempi delle missioni Apollo a oggi.Basti pensare alla recente missione lunare privata americana della sonda Nova-C IM-1 Odysseus realizzata da Intuitive Machines con il supporto della Nasa che, pur avendo - di fatto - riportato gli Stati Uniti sulla Luna dopo più di 50 anni, in realtà ha avuto gravi problemi all'allunaggio ribaltandosi su un fianco dopo aver toccato il suolo.
