crostalein cui risiedono i magmi" dell'Etna è stata individuata da unteam di ricercatori guidato dall'università di Padova, incollaborazione con l'Osservatorio etneo dell'Istituto nazionaledi geofisica e vulcanologia di Catania e l'ateneo di Leeds (GranBretagna). Lo studio, che è stato pubblicato sulla rivistascientifica Geophysical research letters, si è avvalso di unatecnica avanzata di tomografia sismica anisotropa, che considerala variabilità della velocità delle onde sismiche in base alladirezione di propagazione. Questo, secondo i ricercatori, ha"permesso di ottenere informazioni senza precedenti sullastruttura della crosta terrestre nella regione etnea esull'interazione tra tettonica e vulcanismo, evidenziando lepossibili vie attraverso le quali il magma si 'fa strada' versola superficie". L'indagine comprende un periodo di dieci anni,dal 2006 al 2016, durante il quale sono stati registrati oltre3.700 eventi sismici con magnitudo locale compresa tra 0.5 e4.3."La regione individuata - ricostruisce Marco FirettoCarlino, ricercatore dell'Ingv - è limitata da un volume ad altavelocità che immerge verso Nord-Ovest e che è espressione delprocesso di subduzione. Una zona di discontinuità, di possibileorigine tettonica, caratterizza il volume crostale sovrastantela zona di residenza dei magmi, e potrebbe rappresentare una viapreferenziale per il trasferimento del magma verso lasuperficie.
