La sonda Chang'e-6 consiste di un modulo orbitale, un lander e un veicolo di rientro; dispone di una telecamera di atterraggio, una telecamera panoramica, uno spettrografo e un apparecchio per l'analsisi del suolo lunare."Sappiamo che il lato più nascosto della Luna è letteralmente un posto diverso, è fatto di materiale diverso, ha una storia diversa dal lato più vicino alla Terra.
