A contendersi lo scranno più alto di Palazzo Silone a L'Aquila sono il governatore uscente, Marco Marsilio, sostenuto da tutto il centrodestra (FdI, Lega, FI, Noi Moderati, UdC e Democrazia Cristiana con Rotondi e la lista civica Marsilio Presidente) e lo sfidante, Luciano D'Amico, appoggiato da una coalizione di centrosinistra (Pd, M5s, Azione, Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra con Democrazia Solidale, Italia Viva, Psi, +Europa e la lista civica Abruzzo Insieme). Lo spoglio avverrà in notturna, inizierà subito dopo il termine del voto. Non è consentito il voto disgiunto: sarà considerata nulla la scheda con il voto per un candidato presidente e per una lista diversa da quelle a lui collegate.
