O almeno così suggerisce un piccolo studio realizzato su 21 coppie di gemelli omozigoti adulti, pubblicato su Bmc Medicine, durante il quale i volontari, divisi in due gruppi, per 8 settimane hanno seguito due diverse diete: una senza alimenti di origine animale e una onnivora. Il gruppo di ricerca ha progettato lo studio in modo da evitare l'impatto di altri fattori ambientali per valutare i soli effetti dell'alimentazione. E' stato osservato così che un regime vegano è associato a una riduzione delle stime dell’età biologica. Un calcolo che, sul piano tecnico, è basato sui livelli di metilazione del Dna, variazione chimica nota come modificazione epigenetica, che altera l’espressione genetica ma non il Dna stesso. In precedenti ricerche, infatti, era stato evidenziato che l’aumento dei livelli di metilazione del Dna è associato all’invecchiamento. Nel dettaglio i ricercatori che firmano lo studio - Varun Dwaraka, Christopher Gardner e colleghi - hanno analizzato gli effetti molecolari di una dieta vegana a breve termine chiedendo a un gruppo di gemelli (uno per ognuna delle 21 coppie) di seguire un'alimentazione onnivora per otto settimane, con il consumo da 170 a 225 grammi di carne, un uovo e mezza porzione di latticini ogni giorno. L'altro gruppo ha seguito una dieta vegana per lo stesso periodo di tempo. Il campione era composto per il 77% da donne (32) e i partecipanti avevano in media 40 anni. Alla fine dello studio gli autori hanno osservato, oltre a una diminuzione delle stime dell’età biologica in chi seguiva la dieta vegana, anche una diminuzione dell’età del cuore, degli ormoni, del fegato e dei sistemi infiammatori e metabolici. I ricercatori evidenziano che chi non aveva assunto alimenti di origine animale aveva perso in media due chilogrammi in più rispetto a quelli che avevano seguito una dieta onnivora durante le prime quattro settimane dello studio. Queste variazioni di peso - indicano gli scienziati - potrebbero aver contribuito alle differenze osservate nell’età epigenetica di entrambi i gruppi.
