nuovo video realizzato grazie ai dati raccolti dalla stereo camera ad alta risoluzione della sonda Mars Express, in orbita da oltre 20 anni. In meno di due minuti, le immagini mostrano la superficie del pianeta rosso segnata da profondi canyon paralleli simili a graffi: sono le Nili Fossae, strutture geologiche lunghe centinaia di chilometri e profonde centinaia di metri che si dipartono dal bordo orientale del grande cratere Isidis Planitia. Queste fratture della crosta marziana si sono formate in seguito all'impatto di un grande meteorite che circa 4 miliardi di anni fa ha creato il cratere Isidis Planitia, largo 1.900 chilometri. La violenta collisione ha generato anche altre fratture simili sull'altro lato del cratere, le cosiddette Amenthes Fossae. La regione delle Nili Fossae è da tempo sotto la lente dei ricercatori per la grande quantità e diversità di minerali presenti, fra i quali silicati, carbonati e argille (molti dei quali sono stati scoperti dallo strumento Omega di Mars Express). Questi minerali si formano in presenza di acqua, e dunque suggeriscono che in passato la regione doveva essere molto umida. Gran parte del terreno si è formata oltre 3,5 miliardi di anni fa, quando l'acqua superficiale era abbondante su Marte. Gli scienziati ritengono che l'acqua scorresse non solo in superficie ma anche al di sotto di essa, formando flussi idrotermali sotterranei riscaldati da antichi vulcani. La regione di Nili Fossae è così ricca di indizi sul passato di Marte che è stata anche considerata come uno dei possibili siti di atterraggio del rover Curiosity della Nasa (poi disceso nel cratere Gale nel 2012). Un'altra importante missione, quella del rover Perseverance della Nasa, è stata fatta atterrare nel vicino Cratere Jezero, visibile alla fine del video.
