Dopo il fallimento di Peregrine, costretto a rientrare sulla Terra per la perdita di carburante, il ritorno sulla Luna degli Stati Uniti, per la prima volta dopo più di 50 anni, è affidato, ancora una volta, a un operatore commerciale.La missione privata del piccolo Lander IM-1 Nova C "Odysseus" di Intuitive Machine, azienda specializzata in tecnologie lunari - la prima di 3 analoghe finanziate dalla Nasa nell'ambito del programma Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) - è ufficialmente iniziata il 15 febbraio alle 7. 30 del mattino ora italiana, con la partenza del lanciatore Falcon 9 di Space X dalla base Nasa di Cape Canaveral, in Florida.Circa 48 minuti dopo è evvenuto il cosiddetto "deployment" cioé il distacco dal lanciatore del lander che, così, ha iniziato il suo vero e proprio viaggio verso il cratere Malapert A, al polo sud lunare. Se questa volta tutto andrà bene, sarà questo il primo veicolo americano a toccare la superficie lunare dalla missione Apollo 17 del 1972.Sul rover, un cilindro esagonale alto 4 metri e largo poco più di un metro e mezzo per una massa totale di 1.908 kg al lancio, ci sono 5 carichi utili della Nasa e 4 di aziende private, oltre a un'opera d'arte di Jeff Koons.
