Poi, in una telefonata immediatamente successiva, al momento del simulato incontro con i presunti malfattori, richiedeva alla sorella, con toni preoccupati, di allertare le forze dell'ordine perché temeva che potesse succedergli qualcosa di grave.Successivamente, gli indagati avrebbero simulato le tracce del sequestro di persona di Marotta, lasciando la sua auto abbandonata in aperta campagna, con i fari accesi e i cellulari nell'abitacolo.
