(askanews) - Nel cielo di marzo sta dando spettacolo la cometa 12P/Pons-Brooks che incanta astronomi e appassionati di tutto il mondo. Visibile con binocoli e telescopi, è una cometa di straordinaria bellezza con una lunga coda sempre più luminosa man mano che si avvicina al Sole (perielio), con il giro di boa previsto intorno al 21 aprile. Le immagini che state vedendo sono state realizzate dal Virtual Telescope Project a Manciano, in provincia di Grosseto.Pons-Brooks è una cometa periodica, che passa da queste parti circa ogni 71 anni. Venne scoperta il 12 luglio 1812 dall'astronomo Jean-Louis Pons e riscoperta nel passaggio successivo da William Robert Brooks.Al momento, può essere osservata con un binocolo (dicevamo), circa 90 minuti dopo il tramonto del Sole, bassa sull'orizzonte, a nord-ovest, vicino alla costellazione di Andromeda.
