Costretti a restare da soli in un collegio per studenti ricchi e viziati, rompono poco a poco le loro corazze caratteriali e sociali dando vita a un film in perfetto equilibrio tra la commedia e il dramma. Paul Giamatti è eccezionale nella parte del professore, l’imponente Da’Vine Joy Randolph è perfetta nel ruolo di una donna distrutta dal dolore, Dominic Sessa è l’esordiente (allievo del collegio in cui il film è stato girato) di cui sentiremo parlare ancora ◆ La recensione di BATTISTA GARDONCINI *► I distributori italiani hanno aggiunto al titolo originale “The Holdovers”, che letteralmente significa “quelli che restano”, l’insulsa postilla “Lezioni di vita”. Ma il film del regista americano Alexander Payne non ha la pretesa di dare lezioni. Si limita a raccontare la storia di un intransigente professore di storia, di un allievo ribelle e di una cuoca di colore, che durante le vacanze di Natale restano soli in un collegio per studenti ricchi e viziati. Tre persone senza nulla in comune, che inizialmente, fedeli ai rispettivi ruoli, si combattono senza esclusione di colpi. Poco per volta, però, la forzata coabitazione apre una breccia nelle loro corazze caratteriali e sociali, e attraverso il dialogo ognuno dei tre scopre negli altri fragilità e ricchezze insospettate.Con una trama del genere il rischio del melenso è sempre in agguato. Ma Payne, premio Oscar nel 2005 e nel 2012 per le sceneggiature di “Sideways” e “Paradiso amaro”, riesce abilmente ad evitare tutti i tranelli e ci regala un film in perfetto equilibrio tra la commedia e il dramma. Una gran mano gliela danno gli attori. Su tutti un Paul Giamatti eccezionale nella parte del professore ripiegato su se stesso, caustico all’eccesso dopo aver abbandonato ogni ambizione, e tuttavia capace di tenere alta la testa nel momento decisivo del film. L’imponente Da’Vine Joy Randolph è perfetta nella parte di una donna distrutta dal dolore per la scomparsa del figlio soldato – siamo nel 1971, in piena guerra del Vietnam – che con la sua saggezza popolare favorisce il riavvicinamento tra il professore e l’allievo. Ma la vera sorpresa è l’esordiente Dominic Sessa, che interpreta lo studente rifiutato dalla famiglia e già espulso da altri prestigiosi istituti. Dopo centinaia di provini Payne lo ha scovato tra gli allievi del collegio del Massachusetts dove il film è stato girato, ed è stata una scelta felice.
