L'atleta è un tedoforo speciale, un 'cyber tedoforo' lo hanno definito. Perché lui, tennista diventato paraplegico a seguito di un incidente stradale 11 anni fa, indossa un esoscheletro all'avanguardia, prima volta nella storia dei tedofori. Il video del suo passaggio a Poissy ha commosso ed esaltato web e social. "Non dimenticherò mai questo giorno", ha commentato lo stesso Piette su Instagram. "E' con orgoglio e onore che ho potuto portare questa fiamma che rappresenta tante cose belle: impegno, sport, innovazione, inclusione, speranza, futuro", elenca nel suo post, ringraziando per la "giornata incredibile ed emozionante" vissuta. Piette dopo l'incidente "non ha gettato la spugna", si legge sul sito web ufficiale delle Olimpiadi di Parigi. E' tornato allo sport "come paratleta" ed è diventato "un 'pilota' di esoscheletro per un'azienda francese che sviluppa un dispositivo robotico per camminare", Wandercraft, nata nel 2012 dall'iniziativa di tre ingegneri. Lo strumento a cui lavorano è dotato di sensori e di motori posizionati all'altezza di fianchi, ginocchia e caviglie, e permette alle persone in sedia a rotelle di alzarsi in piedi e di camminare e affrontare una riabilitazione intensiva e personalizzata per massimizzare le possibilità di recupero dopo lesioni gravi, e prevenire la comparsa di complicanze da perdita di mobilità. Un telecomando permette di controllare i movimenti dell'esoscheletro. Piette è stato uno dei primi collaudatori di questa azienda e ha contribuito al miglioramento del dispositivo robotico, prendendo anche parte a "cybathlon", si legge, cioè a competizioni in cui persone con disabilità usano tecnologie assistive. "Attualmente utilizzato nella riabilitazione, è in fase di sviluppo una versione personale dell'esoscheletro per consentire una maggiore indipendenza a casa. Portando la torcia olimpica - concludono gli organizzatori dei Giochi - Kevin ispira le persone a impegnarsi nello sport e a promuovere l'innovazione per chi convive con disabilità". Sono diverse le aziende e i centri - anche in Italia - che lavorano a dispositivi simili, robot indossabili. Ognuna di queste ha i suoi super piloti. Piloti come per esempio Alex, 49 anni di Bologna, e Davide, 47enne di Maranello, che sono stati fra i primi pazienti con lesione midollare ad aver sperimentato il robot indossabile di Inail e Istituto italiano di tecnologia (Iit), chiamato Twin (presentato a Milano a febbraio di quest'anno).
