(askanews) - Da questa estate sui litorali italiani arrivano i "tartadogs", i cani per la ricerca dei nidi di tartaruga marina: è un'innovativa forma di collaborazione tra esseri umani e animali per lavorare insieme alla salvaguardia della biodiversità. La Giornata Mondiale delle Tartarughe Marine il 16 giugno segnerà l'inizio di una stagione all'insegna di questa nuova alleanza tra specie. Da fine giugno in Toscana, Lazio, Campania, Puglia e Calabria le unità cinofile, ognuna composta da un conduttore e un cane appositamente addestrato affiancheranno il personale esperto autorizzato dal Ministero dell'Ambiente, pronto a intervenire per la messa in sicurezza del nido una volta individuato. Spesso infatti non vi sono elementi esterni che permettono il riconoscimento visivo dei nidi, poiché le uova possono essere sepolte fino a un metro di profondità sotto la sabbia: un ostacolo insormontabile anche per il più vigile occhio umano, ma non per il formidabile fiuto dei cani. L'attività si colloca nell'ambito dal progetto Life Turtlenest, cofinanziato dal programma LIFE dell'Unione europea, coordinato da Legambiente, e che vede coinvolto in prima linea l'Enci - Ente Nazionale Cinofilia Italiana, partner di progetto. Un vero e proprio unicum a livello europeo, come spiega Antonino Morabito, responsabile Fauna e Benessere animale di Legambiente: "Con questo progetto quindi produrremo un protocollo che consentirà di replicare lo srumento delle unità cinofile in tutto il bacino del Mediterraneo, all'interno del quale la tartaruga marina è in espansione, soprattutto verso il Mediterraneo occidentale, per cui sarà sempre più necessario trovare nei tempi più rapidi possibili questi nidi per metterli in sicurezza dalle tantissime attività antropiche che si realizzano lungo le coste". Saranno coinvolte quattro unità (formate da un tartadog con conduttore) di tre razze diverse: due labrador (un maschio e una femmina), un Pastore Olandese e uno Springer Spaniel. I cani e i loro conduttori (due donne e due uomini), hanno età ed esperienze differenti, ma il percorso formativo grarantisce risultati e prestazioni omogenei. Lavoreranno solo nelle primissime ore del giorno, quando le temperature sono ancora miti e adeguate alla ricerca. Le modalità di attività sono tutte basate sul gioco tra conduttore e cane. Spiega Serena Donnini, addestratrice dell'Enci: "Il loro addestramento consiste nell'imparare a cercare e segnalare con uno specifico comportamento di segnalazione che in questo caso è passiva, ossia il cane si immobilizza in prossimità dell'odore, questi odori in ambiente". Grazie all'osservazione delle squadre in azione saranno confermate o eventualmente modificate le linee guida del protocollo, e verrà prodotta una pubblicazione sulla formazione delle unità cinofile nella detection dei nidi di tartaruga marina.
