(askanews) - Dal James Webb Telescope (JWT) arrivano nuove scoperte che seducono la fantasia degli scienziati alla ricerca di pianeti extrasolari che potrebbero ospitare la vita. Il telescopio orbitante che galleggia nello Spazio a oltre un milione e mezzo di Km dalla Terra, nel punto lagrangiano L2, ha rilevato tracce di molecole di metano e anidride carbonica nell'atmosfera dell'esopianeta K2-18b che si trova a circa 120 anni luce dal nostro pianeta, nella costellazione di Leone.Secondo i dati derivati dalle osservazioni dello spettroscopio sul telescopio orbitante, il pianeta, oltre 8 volte e mezza più massiccio della Terra, in orbita nella zona abitabile attorno a K2-18, una stella nana molto fredda, potrebbe essere un cosiddetto pianeta Hycean, cioé con un'atmosfera ricca di idrogeno e una superficie coperta da un oceano d'acqua e, quindi, potenzialmente in grado di sostenere la vita. Non solo, il JWT avrebbe anche rivelato tracce di solfuro di dimetile (Dms) una molecola che, almeno sulla Terra, è prodotta solo da attività biologiche. La maggior parte del solfuro di dimetile che si trova nell'atmosfera terrestre, infatti, viene emessa dal fitoplancton negli ambienti marini.Naturalmente siamo ben lontani dagli ipotetici, meravigliosi scenari sottomarini del pianeta Pandora immaginati da James Cameron nel suo film "Avatar - la via dell'acqua" che vediamo in queste immagini. Ci sono tante variabili, a partire dalle dimensioni del pianeta che potrebbero scontrarsi con la sua capacità di sostenere la vita. Ma ci sono anche elementi scientifici - e suggestioni - che meritano studi più approfonditi per avere nuove informazioni sulle condizioni ambientali di K2-18b.
