E' presto per dire se le aurore boreali coloreranno ancora il cielo in Italia, mentre di sicuro il Sole sta raggiungendo il massimo di attività del suo ciclo, osserva il Mauro Messerotti, docente di Meteorologia spaziale all'Università di Trieste. All'aumento dell'attività solare si devono anche le aurore osservate nei cieli italiani poco più di un mese fa, fra il 25 e il 26 settembre, ma allora visibili solo dalle regioni settentrionali. "I due fenomeni così vicini nel tempo - osserva Messerotti - indicano che il Sole sta raggiungendo il massimo dell'attività del ciclo 25, previsto nel 2024". Secondo l'esperto "è difficile prevedere se anche stasera il fenomeno si ripeterà con intensità minore, ma da alcune ore è in corso una tempesta geomagnetica moderata di classe G2". Si potrà capire come evolverà nel corso della giornata. Per Messerotti "bisogna anche tener conto della presenza di un esteso buco coronale al meridiano centrale del Sole e verso Ovest, che accelera flussi di vento solare veloce verso la Terra".  In passato "tempeste solari molto intense in cicli solari precedenti hanno dato origine ad aurore visibili quasi fino all'equatore. Ricordiamo ad esempio - conclude - la tempesta solare del 13 marzo 1989 e le tempeste di Halloween nel 2003".L'aurora boreale ha colorato di rosa anche il cielo italiano in un fenomeno rarissimo, dovuto a una forte tempesta geomagnetica. Si tratta di un fenomeno raro perché le aurore sono visibili quasi esclusivamente nelle regioni polari, dove è più intensa l'interazione fra il campo magnetico terrestre e lo sciame di particelle provenienti dal Sole. Ieri sera, però, le aurore hanno colorato il cielo anche in Italia, con straordinarie sfumature rosa osservate e fotografate da astrofili e astronomi di tutto il Paese. Questo è accaduto perché nell'arco di due giorni il campo magnetico terrestre ha subito un forte stress, dovuto all'interazione con uno sciame di particelle (espulsione di massa coronale, Cme) avvenuto sabato 4 novembre, al quale ha fatto seguito il 5 novembre una nuova Cme più intensa della prima, osserva il fisico Mauro Messerotti, docente di Meteorologia spaziale all'Università di Trieste. "Questo ha determinato una tempesta geomagnetica forte di classe G3", su una scala che va da G1 a G5. La tempesta geomagnetica, prosegue Messerotti, "è durata per molte ore e e "l'ovale aurorale, la regione di interazione delle particelle energetiche solari con atomi e molecole dell'atmosfera terrestre, si è allargato fino a comprendere latitudini basse come 30 gradi Nord".
