(askanews) - Il veliero Astral dell'Ong Open Arms ha soccorso questa mattina 55 persone nella zona SAR italiana, a largo di Lampedusa (Agrigento). I naufraghi, tra cui 5 bambini e un neonato di un mese, viaggiavano su una barca di metallo divisa in due parti legate insieme tramite lacci, corde e vecchi stracci, erano partiti 3 giorni fa da Sfax, in Tunisia.Lo ha comunicato la stessa Ong, spiegando che all'arrivo del veliero Astral sul luogo, l'imbarcazione "era in pessime condizioni e circa 20 persone erano già in acqua". I soccorritori, "in costante contatto con le autorità di Italia, Malta e Tunisia, hanno lanciato in prossimità dell'imbarcazione un gommone e una zattera di salvataggio, assicurando le altre persone, ancora sull'imbarcazione, con dei gilet di salvataggio. Tra le 55 persone soccorse, provenienti da Burkina Faso, Camerun, Senegal e Ciad, ci sono 16 donne e 6 bambini di cui alcuni molto piccoli". Open Arms ha ospitato i naufraghi sul proprio veliero Astral in attesa della Guardia Costiera Italiana.Quello di questa mattina è il terzo soccorso che Astral, nel corso della sua missione 111, ha operato nelle ultime 24 ore. Infatti, dopo il soccorso di 12 uomini nella giornata di ieri, intorno alle 3 di questa mattina è stata rinvenuta un'altra imbarcazione, anche questa di metallo a Sud Ovest di Lampedusa."Le immagini del salvataggio di oggi ci mostrano come questa sia, anche questa volta, una tragedia annunciata e fortunatamente scampata" ha detto Valentina Brinis di advocacy officer di Open Arms, aggiungendo che "la situazione del Mediterraneo Centrale è molto critica, lo dimostrano i tanti contatti con imbarcazioni in difficoltà che stiamo avendo in queste ore. Questo dice quanto le attività di ricerca e soccorso messe in atto dalle Organizzazioni non governative siano fondamentali - ha proseguito Brinis - e debbano dunque essere accolte e supportate, e non ostacolate o rallentate dallo Stato italiano e dall'Europa.
