In uno studio presentato alla 25esima Conferenza internazionale dell'Aids a Monaco di Baviera, in Germania, e pubblicato su 'The New England Journal of Medicine', il farmaco lenacapavir dell'americana Gilead Sciences ha azzerato i contagi, mostrando un'efficacia del 100% e una superiorità anche rispetto alla profilassi pre-esposizione (PrEP) Truvada* che si assume una volta al giorno. "Se approvato, lenacapavir rappresenterebbe la prima e unica PrEp somministrabile 2 volte l'anno", sottolinea in una nota Gilead, impegnandosi a "dare priorità a un accesso rapido" al farmaco "e ad attivare percorsi efficienti volti all'approvazione di lenacapavir per la PrEP nei Paesi ad alta incidenza" di infezione da Hiv "e con risorse limitate". Il trial Purpose 1, di fase 3, ha coinvolto 5.345 donne di età compresa tra 16 e 26 anni in 25 centri del Sud Africa e in 3 centri dell'Uganda. I "risultati straordinari" dello studio "indicano che lenacapavir 2 volte l'anno per la PrEP, se approvato, potrebbe offrire una scelta altamente efficace e tollerata", dichiara Linda-Gail Bekker, direttore del Desmond Tutu Hiv Center dell'università di Cape Town in Sud Africa ed ex presidente dell'International Aids Society (Ias), che ha illustrato i dati in conferenza. Commenta i risultati anche Sharon Lewin, presidente della Ias, in una nota della società scientifica.
