(Adnkronos Salute) - La dieta mediterranea? Un antistress che riduce il disagio mentale. Uno studio americano pubblicato su 'Nutrition and Health' aggiunge una nuova voce al lungo elenco dei noti benefici associati al modello alimentare più celebrato dalla scienza ed eletto dall'Unesco Patrimonio culturale intangibile dell'umanità. Un team di ricercatori della Binghamton University, State University di New York ha indagato le ragioni per cui la dieta mediterranea fa bene, oltre che al corpo, anche alla psiche, scoprendo che riduce i livelli di stress percepito. "E' riconosciuto che lo stress è un precursore del disagio mentale - afferma Lina Begdache, docente di studi sulla salute e il benessere e coordinatrice dell'équipe firmataria del lavoro - La ricerca, inclusa la nostra, ha dimostrato che la dieta mediterranea riduce il disagio mentale" e il nuovo studio ha svelato "una tessera del puzzle" che concorre a questa virtù: "La dieta mediterranea può essere associata a una diminuzione delle componenti negative dello stress percepito e a un'amplificazione dei suoi aspetti positivi". Gli scienziati hanno confrontato la dieta mediterranea con la cosiddetta dieta occidentale. La prima a base vegetale, ricca di grassi sani e di cibi salutari colorati dall'ampia 'palette' di madre natura; la seconda fatta di alimenti trasformati, ad alto indice glicemico e di bassa qualità, ricordano gli autori. "Mentre la dieta mediterranea è nota per i suoi benefici sulla salute sia fisica che mentale - spiegano i ricercatori - poco si sa sui suoi effetti sulla percezione di stress, cioè l'idea che una persona ha di quanto stress sta sopportando in un dato momento". Per colmare questa lacuna, Begdache e i suoi studenti hanno condotto un sondaggio su oltre 1.500 persone, chiedendo loro quali tipi di cibi mangiassero e valutando i loro livelli di stress percepito. Utilizzando un modello di apprendimento automatico, sono giunti alla conclusione che "il consumo di componenti della dieta mediterranea è associato a livelli più bassi di stress percepito e di disagio mentale, mentre il consumo di componenti della dieta occidentale è correlato a stress percepito e a disagio mentale". La ricerca del gruppo Usa continua.
