(askanews) - Usando il VLT (Very Large Telescope) dell'Osservatorio europeo australe (Eso) alcuni astronomi hanno osservato, per la prima volta dalla Terra, la grande macchia scura nell'atmosfera di Nettuno, accompagnata da un inaspettato puntino luminoso più piccolo. Queste strutture occasionali ed effimere - spiegano gli scienziati in una nota - sono ancora un mistero e i nuovi risultati forniscono nuovi importanti indizi sulla loro origine.Secondo lo studio pubblicato su Nature Astronomy e condotto da un team di scienziati guidato da Patrick Irwin, dell'Università di Oxford, in Regno Unito, queste macchie sono probabilmente il risultato di particelle d'aria che si scuriscono quando il ghiaccio e il vapore si mescolano nell'atmosfera di Nettuno, in uno strato al di sotto della foschia visibile. Questa macchia scura su Nettuno era stata scoperta nel 2018 grazie al telescopio spaziale Hubble. Con lo spettroscopio Muse (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) del VLT, Irwin e il suo team hanno potuto, ora, approfondirne la conoscenza, scomponendo la luce solare riflessa da Nettuno e dalla macchia nei colori componenti, o lunghezze d'onda, ottenendone uno spettro in 3D per studiarla in modo più dettagliato, determinando meglio l'altezza nell'atmosfera del pianeta alla quale si trova.
