(askanews) - Il famoso "buco dell'ozono" cioè l'assottigliamento dello strato di ozono nell'atmosfera terrestre è tra i più grandi mai registrati fino ad oggi. Le misurazioni dallo Spazio eseguite dal satellite Copernicus Sentinel-5P mostrano che il 16 settembre 2023, sull'Antartide, il "buco"aveva una dimensione di 26 milioni di km quadrati, circa tre volte l'intero Brasile.Va detto che le dimensioni del buco nell'ozono sono sempre fluttuanti; raggiungono il massimo tra metà settembre e metà ottobre. Quando le temperature alte nella stratosfera iniziano a salire nell'emisfero meridionale, l'assottigliamento dell'ozono rallenta, il vortice polare s'indebolisce e si rompe e, a fine dicembre i livelli di ozono tornano alla normalità. Tuttavia, le misure che ha raggiunto nel 2023 sono tra le più ampie mai registrate. Probabilmente, tra le possibili cause, ci potrebbe essere anche l'enorme massa di vapore acqueo iniettato nella stratosfera dall'eruzione del vulcano Hunga Tonga nell'Oceano Pacifico nel gennaio 2022, anche se questa ipotesi è ancora al vaglio dei ricercatori.L'assottigliamento dell'ozono è dovuto prevalentemente alla presenza nell'atmosfera di clorofluorocarburi (Cfc) gas presenti nei frigoriferi e nelle lattine spray; una presenza dovuta all'attività umana ma non solo. L'ozono è una sorta di scudo per le radiazioni UV-C e UV-B che, quindi, in sua mancanza raggiungono più facilmente la superficie terrestre, causandone un maggior riscaldamento con tutto quelle che ne consegue, come lo scioglimento dei ghiacci, in particolare nella zona antartica dove il fenomeno è più presente a causa delle masse d'aria che scorrono intorno al pianeta, per lo più per effetto della sua rotazione e che agiscono come una sorta di barriera.Sulla base del Protocollo di Montreal e della diminuzione delle sostanze nocive prodotte dall'uomo, gli scienziati attualmente prevedono che lo strato di ozono globale raggiungerà di nuovo il suo stato normale solo entro il 2050.L'Agenzia spaziale europea (Esa) è stata coinvolta nel monitoraggio dell'ozono per molti anni. Lanciato nell'ottobre 2017, il satellite Copernicus Sentinel-5P è il primo satellite Copernicus dedicato al monitoraggio della nostra atmosfera.
