Il lancio della Ax-3 è previsto dalla base Nasa di Cape Canaveral, in Florida a gennaio 2024. "Per la prima volta una missione spaziale è guidata dal Ministero della Difesa e dall'Aeronautica Militare, tra le principali istituzioni nel dominio aerospaziale, con un'importante partnership con l'Agenzia spaziale italiana".Dei circa 30 esperimenti che i quattro astronauti europei condurranno a bordo dell'ISS nelle due settimane di permanenza nello Spazio, tre in particolare, sono italiani, condotti, appunto, in collaborazione con l'Asi: uno riguarda gli effetti della microgravità sul corpo umano durante le missioni spaziali degli astronauti, uno studia i processi di aggregazione di alcune proteine che si attivano durante processi neurodegenerativi, per esempio nei malati di Alzheimer e che potrebbe portare in futuro a nuove cure per questo tipo di malattie e, infine, uno specifico della Difesa e dell'Aeronautica Militare che riguarda la cosiddetta Space Situational Awareness (SSA)."Penso che questa - ha aggiunto Villadei - sia davvero una grande opportunità per provare che l'Italia può dare forma a un nuovo approccio ai voli spaziali commerciali per espandere le opportunità per tutta la nostra comunità scientifica e industriale.
