nuove prospettive terapeutiche per una radicale cura dell'infezione da HIV e dell'AIDS.Il lavoro scientifico, dal titolo "The Complex Dysregulations of CD4 T Cell Subtypes in HIV Infection", condotto dal Dottor Manlio Tolomeo e dal Professore Antonio Cascio, è stato pubblicato sulla prestigiosa rivista "International Journal of Molecular Science" (consultabile all'indirizzo URL: https://doi.org/10.3390/ijms25147512.)In estrema sintesi, i risultati della ricerca si basano sullo studio di alcuni sottotipi di T linfociti CD4+ infetti dove il virus si "nasconde" e che proteggerebbero attivamente l'HIV dall'azione antivirale del sistema immunitario. Il lavoro, già il primo giorno di pubblicazione, ha avuto quasi 400 lettori nel mondo."Due sottotipi di linfociti T CD4+ infetti sarebbero coinvolti - spiegano gli studiosi del Policlinico - nella protezione del virus: i T regolatori (Threg) e i CD4+CTL. I Threg infettati dall'HIV proteggerebbero il virus mediante la produzione di citochine inibenti il sistema immunitario, mentre i CD4+CTL infetti aggredirebbero e ucciderebbero le cellule del sistema immunitario che cercano di eliminare il virus. Cosa ancora più interessante - concludono - l'HIV è in grado di trasformare le cellule che ci proteggono dalle infezioni opportunistiche (causa di morte nell'AIDS), denominate Th17, in cellule Treg potenziando, inoltre, significativamente l'azione immunosoppressiva di queste cellule".Sulla base di questi nuovi dati, stanno emergendo modalità terapeutiche che potrebbero portare alla completa eliminazione del virus agendo su questi "serbatoi cellulari infetti" che mantengono e proteggono il virus stesso.
