I pilastri di luce sono un fenomeno ottico atmosferico ben documentato causato dalla riflessione della luce da minuscoli cristalli di ghiaccio sospesi nell'atmosfera. Tempo freddo, cielo sereno e vento calmo permettono ai cristalli di ghiaccio di formarsi nell'aria vicino al suolo, agendo da riflettori per la luce proveniente da varie fonti. Ancora il ricercatore italiano: “I residenti locali e gli ufficiali hanno notato che nella notte in cui sono state scattate le immagini, si sono svolti diversi eventi sportivi e decorazioni festive che coinvolgevano un'illuminazione artificiale significativa.
