Il telescopio orbitante a Raggi-X Xrism (X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) è pronto per essere lanciato nello Spazio il 26 agosto 2023 dalla base spaziale di Tanegashima, in Giappone. Per i prossimi 3 anni almeno, potrà osservare gli oggetti e gli eventi più energetici del cosmo, svelando i misteri dell'evoluzione dell'Universo e la struttura dello Spazio-tempo.La missione è frutto di una collaborazione tra l'Agenzia spaziale giapponese Jaxa e l'americana Nasa, con una partecipazione significativa dell'Esa, l'Agenzia spaziale europea.Lavorando a temperature prossime allo zero assoluto (-273 gradi centigradi) e grazie ai suoi 2 strumenti scientifici: lo spettrometro "Resolve" e il sensore d'immagini a Raggi-X "Xtend", Xrism misurerà (scomponendola) la luce a Raggi-X proveniente da oggetti incredibilmente densi come i buchi neri supermassicci attivi che si trovano al centro di alcune galassie per capire come deformano lo spazio-tempo circostante e in che misura influenzano le galassie ospiti. Quando osserviamo il cielo, infatti, vediamo stelle e galassie che ci dicono relativamente poco sul funzionamento dell'Universo. Invisibile ai nostri occhi, invece, il gas che emette Raggi-X e che si trova all'interno di queste galassie - e tra queste - può rivelare molto di più.Grazie al fatto che ciascun elemento chimico riflette la luce in modo differente, inoltre, le osservazioni di Xrism forniranno anche informazioni su come l'Universo li ha prodotti e distribuiti. Il gas caldo all'interno degli ammassi è un residuo della nascita e della morte delle stelle.
