Per questo tre giovani ricercatori (Youssef Nader, dottorando a Berlino, Luke Farritor, studente e apprendista di SpaceX dal Nebraska negli Stati Uniti, e Julian Schilliger, studente svizzero di robotica) hanno vinto un premio di 700.000 dollari alla "Vesuvius Challenge", competizione ideata da Brent Seales, ricercatore informatico presso l'Università del Kentucky e da Nat Friedman, fondatore della piattaforma Github, ora di proprietà di Microsoft. I documenti della villa dei Papiri di Ercolano, circa 800 rotoli carbonizzat, l'unica biblioteca antica giunta intatta fino a noi, sono conservati presso l'Institut de France di Parigi e la Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli; fragili, tanto da danneggiarsi facilmente solo nel tentativo di srotolarli. Gli organizzatori del concorso ne avevano già scansionati quattro e hanno offerto un milione di dollari a chiunque fosse riuscito a decifrare almeno l'85% di quattro passaggi di 140 caratteri. Il trio ha usato l'intelligenza artificiale per distinguere l'inchiostro dal papiro e ha determinato la natura dei caratteri greci individuando le ripetizioni. Secondo gli organizzatori hanno decifrato circa il 5% del testo.
