Non è solo questione di igiene: il sorriso, per l'82,3% degli italiani, è una dichiarazione di stile e attenzione alla bellezza, un biglietto da visita per la cura personale. Ma non si tratta solo di estetica: secondo il 78,6% la salute orale è essenziale anche per una corretta alimentazione. Sono alcuni dati che emergono da una ricerca condotta da AstraRicerche e Philips Sonicare, in collaborazione con Angelica Cesena, biologa e nutrizionista, che evidenzia anche aspetti sul rapporto tra alimentazione e igiene orale. Il 66,4% degli intervistati - si legge in una nota - sa che le bevande gassate ed energetiche possono danneggiare lo smalto dei denti a causa della loro acidità; meno noto il ruolo del reflusso-gastroesofageo nell'erosione dentale (58%). Il 62% riconosce l'importanza di assumere integratori e vitamine per rafforzare i denti fragili, mentre il 61% è a conoscenza delle proprietà antinfiammatorie degli omega-3 contenuti nel pesce azzurro e nella frutta secca. Mentre il 57,4% sa che l'acqua aiuta a mantenere i denti puliti rimuovendo eventuali residui di cibo, il 47,8% è al corrente che alimenti come la frutta croccante e cibi crudi - mele, mandorle, sedano - favoriscono la naturale pulizia dei denti e contribuiscono alla prevenzione delle carie. Meno della metà (46,6%) sa che pesce, frutti di mare e formaggio contengono, anche se in piccole parte, il fluoro, fondamentale per la salute dei denti. Per quanto riguarda le gengive, appena il 33,1% riconosce il potere antinfiammatorio dei kiwi e che questo frutto contrasta anche l'ingiallimento dello smalto dei denti. Persistono alcune convinzioni errate: 1 italiano su 3 crede erroneamente che le bevande gassate 'zero' non siano dannose per i denti, mentre 1 su 4 pensa che bere acqua e limone al mattino a digiuno sia benefico per la salute dentale. "Seppur dalla ricerca emerga l'importanza per la popolazione della cura dell'igiene orale, soprattutto dal punto di vista estetico - afferma Cesena - permangono molte perplessità rispetto al legame tra alimentazione e igiene dentale. Per noi professionisti della nutrizione ci sono sicuramente molti punti su cui fare divulgazione e sensibilizzare il pubblico a pratiche più sane. Un esempio è la convinzione che le bibite zero non possano causare problemi visto l'assenza di zucchero, oppure la cattiva informazione che il calcio possa essere presente solo in latte e derivati".
