È appena diventata la prima donna araba a diplomarsi al programma di addestramento della NASA. Era una dei due candidati scelti dall'Agenzia spaziale degli Emirati Arabi Uniti (UAESA) nel 2021 per iscriversi alla formazione con l'Agenzia spaziale degli Stati Uniti.Durante una cerimonia, Nora, ingegnere meccanico di formazione che ha anche lavorato nell'industria petrolifera, ha ricevuto il distintivo d'argento, una tradizione che risale alla selezione degli astronauti per Mercury 7 nel 1959. Quello d'oro viene assegnato dopo il primo volo. "Penso che diventare astronauta sia difficile, indipendentemente dalla tua religione o dal tuo background. Quindi non credo che essere musulmana lo abbia reso più difficile. E io che sono diventata astronauta non faccio altro che costruire su quell'eredità di ciò che loro hanno iniziato mille, migliaia di anni fa".La NASA, ha raccontato, è stata molto accomodante e rispettosa delle sue esigenze, modificando gli orari degli allenamenti più intensi in base agli orari di digiuno del Ramadan e con un hijab speciale che poteva indossare sotto la tuta spaziale.Dppo due anni di lavoro, comprese le passeggiate spaziali di prova, AlMatrooshi, il suo collega emiratino Mohammad AlMulla e altri 10 della loro classe di addestramento, sono astronauti pienamente qualificati, idonei per le missioni NASA verso la Stazione Spaziale Internazionale (ISS), per i lanci Artemis verso la Luna e, se tutto va bene, anche per volare su Marte.Nora ha le idee molto chiare sul suo futuro: "Voglio portare l'umanità più lontano che mai.
