(askanews) - Il satellite EarthCARE dell'ESA, pronto a rivoluzionare la nostra conoscenza su come le nuvole e gli aerosol influenzano il nostro clima con i suoi quattro strumenti all'avanguardia, è stato lanciato dalla base di Vandenberg in California. Appena 10 minuti dopo aver intrapreso il suo viaggio, il satellite si è separato dal razzo e alle 01:14 CEST, la stazione di terra di Hartebeesthoek in Sudafrica ha ricevuto l'importantissimo segnale che indica che EarthCARE è in orbita sicura intorno alla Terra.Con la crisi climatica sempre più allarmante, Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer dell'ESA, o EarthCARE in breve, fornirà informazioni cruciali per gettare nuova luce sulle complesse interazioni tra nuvole, aerosol e radiazioni all'interno dell'atmosfera terrestre. Questa nuova missione consiste in una collaborazione tra ESA e la Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) ed è stata progettata e costruita da un consorzio di oltre 75 aziende, tra cui Airbus come primo contraente.Per la direttrice dei programmi di osservazione della Terra dell'ESA, Simonetta Cheli, "EarthCARE è la più complessa delle missioni di ricerca dell'ESA fino ad oggi. Il suo sviluppo, e ora il lancio, è stato possibile solo grazie alla stretta collaborazione con il nostro partner JAXA, che hanno contribuito allo strumento radar di profilazione cloud del satellite, e tutti i team dell'industria spaziale coinvolti. La missione arriva in un momento critico in cui far progredire le nostre conoscenze scientifiche è più importante che mai per comprendere e agire sui cambiamenti climatici, e non vediamo l'ora di ricevere i primi dati".Eiichi Tomita, Project Manager di JAXA per il radar di profilazione cloud, ha aggiunto: "Aumentare l'accuratezza dei modelli climatici globali utilizzando i dati EarthCARE ci permetterà di prevedere meglio il clima in futuro e quindi adottare le misure di mitigazione necessarie. JAXA ha fornito il cloud profiling radar, il primo radar al mondo in grado di misurare la velocità del flusso verso l'alto e verso il basso all'interno delle nuvole. Ci aspettiamo che i dati prodotti da EarthCARE siano notevoli".Il satellite EarthCARE è ora controllato dal Centro operativo Spaziale europeo dell'ESA a Darmstadt, in Germania.
