Interpretato da Costner − che è anche regista e produttore − ha qualche lentezza di troppo e una sceneggiatura in alcuni punti dispersiva ma non delude gli appassionati del genere. Forse anche una riduzione televisiva ◆ La recensione di BATTISTA GARDONCINI *► Appartengo alla schiera  – sempre meno numerosa per la verità – degli amanti del western. A noi basta poco per essere felici. I paesaggi. Gli indiani, che un tempo erano cattivissimi e adesso non lo sono più. Le giubbe blu. I pionieri. Molti cavalli. Pistole fumanti in un saloon con un pianoforte sgangherato e qualche discinta ballerina. A volte i messicani. Nel monumentale “Horizon” di Kevin Costner, appena arrivato nelle nostre sale, si trova tutto questo e anche di più. Forse addirittura troppo, affastellato un po’ alla rinfusa, nell’ansia di confezionare un prodotto capace di dire la parola definitiva in un genere che secondo molti ha fatto il suo tempo.Costner – che è regista, produttore e attore – non si è risparmiato. Questa prima parte del suo lavoro dura due ore e cinquanta minuti. La seconda, di durata simile, uscirà ad agosto. E ne arriveranno altre due, e forse una riduzione televisiva. Nella San Pedro Valley, al confine tra l’Arizona e il Messico, un primo tentativo di insediamento di un gruppo di pionieri finisce in un massacro ad opera degli Apaches. Ma altri li seguono, e, protetti dall’esercito, fondano la città di Horizon, che diventa il centro della narrazione, il punto dove convergono tutte le storie individuali e collettive raccontate da Costner, che ritaglia per sé il ruolo di Hayes Ellison, un cowboy errante abilissimo con la pistola, ma restio ad usarla. In questa prima puntata Ellison è nel Montana, ma è facile immaginare che prima o poi arriverà anche lui nella città dove si svolge l’azione principale. Resta da vedere quanti dei personaggi via via incontrati saranno ancora in vita alla fine della storia.“Horizon” è uno strano ibrido, un pò film e un pò serie tv. Forse non è perfettamente riuscito a causa di qualche lentezza di troppo e di una sceneggiatura in alcuni punti dispersiva, ma resta un prodotto di qualità, che non deluderà gli appassionati del vecchio West.
