(askanews) - L'astronauta italiana dell'Agenzia spaziale europea (Esa), Samantha Cristoforetti martedì 10 ottobre 2023 ha ricevuto dalle mani della rettrice della Sapienza Università di Roma Antonella Polimeni, il dottorato di ricerca honoris causa in Ingegneria aeronautica e spaziale, nel corso della cerimonia d'inaugurazione dell'anno accademico 2023-2024, 721° dalla fondazione.Samantha Cristoforetti ha completato la sua prima missione di lunga durata, "Futura" sulla Stazione spaziale internazionale tra il 2014 e il 2015 ed è tornata nello Spazio, con una navetta Crew Dragon di SpaceX, per la sua seconda missione, "Minerva" nel 2022, nel corso della quale ha effettuato anche una missione extraveicolare ed è stata la prima donna europea comandante dell'ISS.Il comandante Cristoforetti - ha spiegato Sergio Pirozzoli, Coordinatore del Dottorato di ricerca in Ingegneria aeronautica e spaziale nel motivare il conferimento del dottorato, "con le sue attività in orbita non solo ha aperto nuove frontiere per l'esplorazione spaziale ponendo anche le condizioni per il miglioramento delle condizioni di vita sul pianeta ma ha lavorato anche per promuovere l'uguaglianza di genere". "È un grande onore e un grande privilegio essere alla Sapienza Università di Roma per ricevere questo dottorato honoris causa - ha detto Samantha Cristoforetti ad askanews - e un'opportunità di parlare ai giovani e alle giovani dell'importanza che il nostro Paese, in Europa nel complesso, aumenti il livello di ambizione nell'esplorazione spaziale anche perseguendo delle proprie capacità autonome di portare esseri umani nello spazio". AstroSamantha ha tenuto agli studenti e agli ospiti una lectio magistralis sullo Spazio come opportunità di crescita per l'Italia e l'Europa nell'ambito della cosiddetta new space economy, ricordando anche la corsa verso la privatizzazione dello Spazio e le cosiddette missioni commerciali come la Axiom-3 che vedrà impegnato prossimamente anche il Colonnello dell'Aeronautica Militare, Walter Villadei."Tanti Paesi che non hanno avuto in passato la possibilità di far volare astronauti - ha spiegato - stanno facendo i loro primi passi, comprando voli per i loro cittadini, i cosiddetti voli commerciali; i sauditi, per esempio, con due astronauti, un uomo e una donna a bordo della missione Axiom-2 dello scorso maggio ma prossimamente anche i turchi, diversi Paesi europei di medie dimensioni e persino, con un'iniziativa della Difesa, l'Italia".Un focus particolare, il comandante Cristoforetti lo ha dedicato proprio all'accesso autonomo allo Spazio per le missioni "abitate", una sfida nella quale i giovani europei non possono restare a guardare."È importante per loro, per il nostro futuro e il futuro dei nostri figli, del nostro Paese e dell'Europa, ben al di là dei voli degli astronauti.
