Gli anziani che frequentano centri fitness "non sono una novità - chiarisce Ferrara - Semmai, di nuovo c'è il fatto che i benefici dell'attività fisica arrivano anche se fino a 70 anni non si è sollevato un peso e non si è fatta un'attività sportiva strutturata, come conferma uno studio condotto dall'Università di Birmingham" e pubblicato dalla rivista Frontiers of Phisiology. "Sia chiaro, a questa età non serve andare in palestra per fare i muscoli da culturista come Arnold Schwarzenegger - mette in guardia il geriatra - ma è sufficiente evitare l'ascensore, scendere dalla metropolitana o dal bus 2-3 fermate prima, fare le scale". Tutto questo, "abbinato ad un corretto stile di vita, aiuta ad invecchiare meglio e bene. Prima si inizia e maggiori saranno i risultati, sia in termini di funzionamento degli organi e degli apparati, non solo muscolare, sia in termini di invecchiamento attivo.
