Gli appassionati possono osservarla con un binocolo o un telescopio come ha spiegato ad askanews l'astrofisico Gianluca Masi, del Virtual Telescope Project."Non è, purtroppo, un astro piumato visibile ad occhio nudo, supererà marginalmente la soglia di visibilità naturale con i nostri sensi ma sarà appena percettibile soltanto stando sotto cieli bui. Dunque, nulla di spettacolare, però basta un binocolo o un piccolo telescopio, già adesso, guardando poco dopo il tramonto, in direzione nord-ovest, per apprezzarla".La cometa fu scoperta nel luglio 1812 dall'astronomo Jean-Louis Pons e poi riosservata da William Robert Brooks nel 1883 che ne confermò la periodicità di circa 71 anni."È tra le più brillanti e appartiene, con il suo periodo, alla famiglia della cometa di Halley che ha un periodo di poco più lungo.
