Si chiama Gliese 12 b e, benché leggermente più piccolo della Terra, offrirebbe condizioni climatiche non molto diverse da quelle presenti sul nostro pianeta. La cosa più incredibile, evidenziano gli scienziati con un certo entusiasmo, è che Gliese 12 b dista appena 40 anni luce. La specie umana potrebbe esser dunque prossima a colonizzare il suo primo pianeta alieno. I dettagli della scoperta, pubblicati sulle pagine della Monthly Notice of the Royal Astronomical Society, evidenziano come la temperatura media del pianeta si aggiri attorno ai 107 Fahrenheit, poco più di 40 gradi: è la più bassa rilevata tra i quasi 5mila esopianeti scoperti fino a oggi. Gliese 12 b è stato individuato dal team internazionale grazie all’uso del Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) della NASA. “Gliese 12 b, allo stato attuale, è il pianeta temperato più vicino alla Terra”, ha detto l’astrofisico Michael McElwain, ricercatore presso il Goddard Space Flight Center della NASA e co-autore dello studio, a Phys.org. Gli scienziati vorrebbero ora sfruttare il telescopio spaziale James Webb per osservarne l’aspetto e comprendere meglio la natura di questo pianeta. Per determinare se Gliese 12 b è realmente abitabile i ricercatori dovranno scoprire se ha un’atmosfera simile a quella terrestre. Un’atmosfera che potrebbe consentirle di avere acqua sulla superficie, l’ingrediente essenziale per la vita."Gliese 12 b rappresenta una grande opportunità per la scienza – dice poi Shishir Dholakia, uno studente di dottorato presso l'Università di Los Angeles -. Finalmente sarà possibile capire se i pianeti delle dimensioni della nostra Terra, che orbitano attorno a stelle fredde, possono mantenere la propria atmosfera. Sarà un passo cruciale per comprendere l'abitabilità dei vari pianeti presenti nella nostra galassia".La distanza tra Gliese 12 b e la sua stella è soltanto il 7 per cento della distanza che separa la Terra dal Sole. Ciò significa che riceve 1,6 volte più energia rispetto a quella che investe il nostro pianeta. Tuttavia, gli astrofisici sono convinti che la sua atmosfera sia perfettamente intatta, perché non soggetta ai violenti brillamenti tipici delle nane rosse. “Gliese 12 b – conclude Dholakia - rappresenta uno delle migliori opportunità per studiare se i pianeti delle dimensioni della Terra che orbitano attorno a stelle fredde possono o meno mantenere la loro atmosfera.
