(Adnkronos Salute) - La vaccinazione contro Mpox, l'ex vaiolo delle scimmie, organizzata dalla Regione Lazio e coordinata tra il 2022 e il 2024 dall'Istituto nazionale per le malattie infettive Lazzaro Spallanzani Irccs di Roma quale centro vaccinale unico regionale ha coinvolto "oltre 3.500 persone a rischio, per un totale di oltre 6.000 dosi somministrate". I risultati sono stati presentati dal responsabile del programma Andrea Antinori, direttore del Dipartimento clinico dell'Inmi, alla 25esima International Aids Conference (Aids 2024) che si è svolta dal 22 al 26 luglio a Monaco di Baviera in Germania, promossa dalla International Aids Society. Il vaccino si è dimostrato efficace e sicuro, e secondo i ricercatori dello Spallanzani, "accanto alle modifiche dei comportamenti sessuali a rischio e alle azioni di sanità pubblica, ha contribuito in modo sostanziale allo spegnersi dell'epidemia da Mpox nella regione". Antinori - riferisce oggi l'Inmi in una nota - ha descritto l'impatto epidemiologico e di sanità pubblica della vaccinazione con Mva-Bn (Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bn), gli esiti clinici della campagna vaccinale, il suo grado di accettazione e i risultati delle valutazioni di immunogenicità del vaccino. La campagna vaccinale regionale ha avuto "un alto grado di adesione nella popolazione target, con una copertura di quasi il 50%", e il vaccino si è dimostrato "in grado di indurre una potente risposta immunitaria nel periodo immediatamente successivo alla vaccinazione stessa". Tanto che nel Lazio, "nel periodo successivo all'inizio della campagna vaccinale, è stato osservato un solo caso di Mpox in persona vaccinata".Antinori ha inoltre riportato i risultati della risposta immunitaria a distanza di un anno dalla vaccinazione, che mostrano "una persistenza dell'immunità contro il virus, in particolare nelle persone che erano state vaccinate nell'infanzia per il vaiolo, mentre non si sono osservate risposte immunitarie alla vaccinazione diverse tra le persone con Hiv e la restante parte della popolazione. La somministrazione di 2 dosi sembra suscitare una risposta immunitaria superiore.
