Il film è l’adattamento cinematografico dell’omonimo romanzo di Alasdair Gray, testo surrealista di forte critica sociale che diventa terreno fertile per le capacità creative del regista greco ◆ La recensione di GIULIA FAZIO► Nel film di Yorgos Lanthimos, Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) è un’adulta che si muove e parla come una bambina nella casa surreale del dottor Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). L’evoluzione delle sue facoltà motorie e cognitive è il cardine essenziale della sua progressione in quanto individuo che, attraverso gli insegnamenti recepiti e l’osservazione sistematica, riesce a “creare” la persona che diventerà. Se la creatura del dottor Frankenstein veniva ripugnata dal suo stesso “padre”, qui è Godwin ad essere il mostro e Bella la sua bellissima creatura. Il mostro di Frankenstein evoca un abominio, il profondo timore di aberrazione e sovvertimento di un determinato ordine, ma esso diviene anche il depositario delle caratteristiche prometeiche, facendosi carico egli stesso di aprire nuovi orizzonti per l’umanità.Ciò che rende Bella mostruosa è il suo desiderio di libertà, la propensione all’anticonformismo e la naturalezza con cui rifiuta e non comprende i dettami restrittivi e ipocriti della società. Bella è il prodotto della sperimentazione di Godwin e del trapianto del cervello del feto che portava in grembo. Emerge presto in lei il desiderio naturale di constatare la realtà fuori dalle mura di casa Baxter e scappa con Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), uomo libertino e senza scrupoli, che la seduce in un viaggio alla scoperta del mondo e dei piaceri sessuali. I luoghi in cui giungono sfuggono alla realtà e si addentrano nel territorio del fantastico e del simbolico, diventando le tappe del percorso di formazione della protagonista. Le immagini in bianco e nero si tingono così di colori vivaci, segnalando il nuovo orizzonte conoscitivo intrapreso. A Lisbona, Bella inizia un progressivo distaccamento dall’autoritario e possessivo amante che, non sopportando la sua sete di conoscenza, tenterà di recluderla in una nave da crociera per poter esercitare un maggiore controllo. Nonostante gli atti violenti perpetuati da Duncan, la donna respinge le sue pretese e forma delle amicizie utili alla legittimazione della propria indipendenza. Lo spettatore per tutta la narrazione percepisce le cose con gli stessi occhi ingenui di Bella; con e attraverso lei riscopriamo le verità sostanziali dell’esistenza.Tappa fondamentale del percorso verso l’emancipazione è Parigi: città gotica e futurista in cui Bella scopre la prostituzione e la produzione di guadagno tramite l’utilizzo dei propri mezzi. Con l’irriverente ironia che permane per tutta la narrazione, Lanthimos pone il bordello come l’ambiente ideale per possibilità emancipatorie. Nel successivo rientro di Bella a Londra a causa della malattia di Godwin, la donna è profondamente cambiata rispetto alla sua partenza, e gli eventi che seguono ne sono la conferma.L’emancipazione si ottiene grazie alla fondamentale capacità dell’individuo di sfuggire alle costrizioni sociali tramite l’autodeterminazione. Ed è per questo che Povere creature! è uno straordinario racconto gotico che cattura per la sorprendente bellezza visiva, la bravura degli interpreti e la regia visionaria, ma soprattutto per la narrazione fortemente contemporanea.
