(askanews) - Utilizzando il Very Large Telescope (Vlt) dell'ESO, l'Osservatorio Europeo Australe, alcuni astronomi hanno studiato i dettagli di un super quasar che non solo è il più brillante della sua classe ma anche l'oggetto più luminoso mai osservato nell'universo. I quasar sono i nuclei luminosi di galassie distanti e sono alimentati da buchi neri supermassicci. La massa del buco nero di questo quasar da record è di 17 volte quella della nostra stella e cresce dell'equivalente di un Sole al giorno, rendendolo il buco nero con la crescita più rapida mai scoperto fino a oggi. I buchi neri che alimentano i quasar raccolgono la materia dall'ambiente circostante in un processo così energetico che emette grandi quantità di luce, per questo i quasar sono tra gli oggetti più luminosi del cosmo e anche quelli molto distanti sono visibili dalla Terra. Questo quasar, chiamato J0529-4351, è così lontano dalla Terra che la sua luce ha impiegato oltre 12 miliardi di anni per raggiungerci.La materia attirata al suo interno emette così tanta energia che il buco nero è oltre 500 trilioni di volte più luminoso del Sole e il suo disco di accrescimento misura sette anni luce di diametro, circa 15.000 volte la distanza del Sole dall'orbita di Nettuno.
