(askanews) - Utilizzando il VLT (Very Large Telescope) dell'ESO (Osservatorio Europeo Australe) in Cile, un team di scienziati provenienti da più di 10 paesi - guidato da Christian Ginski, dell'Università di Galway, in Irlanda - ha catturato straordinarie immagini che svelano i segreti sul complesso processo della formazione di nuovi esopianeti intorno a stelle giovani nella nostra galassia. Del team fa parte anche Antonio Garufi, astronomo dell'Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri del'Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), autore di uno dei 3 articoli, pubblicati su Astronomy & Astrophysics.L'equipe ha studiato un totale di 86 stelle in tre diverse regioni di formazione stellare della Via Lattea: Taurus e Chamaeleon I, entrambi a circa 600 anni luce dalla Terra, e Orione, una nube ricca di gas a circa 1600 anni luce da noi nota come il luogo di nascita di numerose stelle più massicce del Sole. Le nuove immagini mostrano la straordinaria diversità dei dischi che formano i vari pianeti. "Alcuni mostrano enormi bracci a spirale, presumibilmente guidati dall'intricato balletto di pianeti in orbita - ha spiegato Ginski - altri mostrano anelli e grandi cavità scavate dai pianeti in formazione, mentre altri ancora sembrano lisci e quasi dormienti".Fino ad oggi sono stati scoperti più di 5000 pianeti in orbita intorno a stelle diverse dal Sole, spesso all'interno di sistemi nettamente diversi dal Sistema Solare. Per capire dove e come nasce questa diversità, gli astronomi devono osservare i cosiddetti "dischi di accrescimento", zone ricche di polvere e gas che avvolgono le giovani stelle, le culle stesse della formazione dei pianeti.
