Giornata nazionale del sacrificio del lavoro italiano nel mondo. La portata della tragedia che sessantotto anni fa sconvolse 262 famiglie - di cui 136 italiane - le ha fatto assumere una fortissima carica simbolica". Lo afferma il presidente della Repubblica, Sergio Mattarella, in occasione del 68° anniversario della tragedia di Marcinelle e della 23^ Giornata nazionale del sacrificio del lavoro italiano nel mondo. "Quanto accadde al Bois du Cazier è dunque un richiamo alla memoria del sacrificio di tutti lavoratori italiani deceduti all'estero nello svolgimento delle proprie attività professionali e a quanti hanno recato il contributo della propria industriosità a Paesi anche lontani. Fin dal suo primo articolo la Costituzione della Repubblica stabilisce un vincolo ideale inscindibile tra democrazia e lavoro. Il pieno rispetto della dignità dei lavoratori ne è un principio fondamentale, affermato anche al livello internazionale; un obiettivo che, tuttavia, non è stato ancora pienamente raggiunto".
