Vega-C posizionerà Smile in un'orbita terrestre bassa, dalla quale il veicolo spaziale si spingerà fino a circa 121.000 km dalla superficie terrestre per una osservazione prolungata delle regioni polari settentrionali, prima di avvicinarsi a meno di 5000 km per trasmettere il suo tesoro di dati raccolti alle stazioni di terra in Antartide e in Cina.Smile otterrà le prime immagini e i primi video a raggi X del vento solare che incontra la bolla magnetica che protegge la Terra. Le immagini ultraviolette complementari forniranno la più lunga osservazione continua dell'aurora boreale.
